Cut the noise (Zenfluent Maria)
... cut the noise and I like to call this the fake productivity trap because the fake productivity will give you the impression that you're improving but it's a trap What do I mean by fake productivity: watching endless ... videos on fluency tips. You have to cut this, you have to really open your eyes and see what you're following. Is this helping you, is this for fun, is this for entertainment, what do you gain by watching that video? Really deeply think about this and if it doesn't serve you unfollow, so, cut the noise. You also have to stop saving videos on youtube ... or any other app ... that you're going to watch later which obviously will never happen and you need to declutter your space ... you need to stop reading about English learning more stuff instead of actually using it because real progress will only happen when you actually start to apply the knowledge that you already have.
Instead of when will I see progress you want to ask yourself am I committed to the process and see how that shifts your perspective immediately because if you stick to the process fluency is inevitable, confidence is inevitable, speaking english with ease, feeling like yourself when you speak english is inevitable.
I Learned English to a C2 Level as an Introvert
The author shares his experience and offers advice.
1. He moved his learning to the morning hours, when he is less tired and more productive.
2. He talks about dopamine detox, chasing cheap dopamine, and the need to eliminate this chase.
The sources of a cheap dopamine include social media, news, short videos, YouTube videos, movies, and so on.
So, he cut off his sources of cheap dopamine for 30 days. and "by the end of the 30 days, my progress skyrocketed. Learning English felt really good. Like I didn't even have to make that much effort. I wanted to do it because English became now my main source of dopamine."
3. He applied the 80%-20% rule to his learning but in unusual way
"Speaking and writing were the most powerful. Every time I practice speaking, my brain had to think in English. Every time I wrote in English, I was training my brain to form sentences faster. These two skills forced me to activate my English. They were the most difficult but also the most effective. ...
Instead of putting 20% of my effort, I put it 80% on purpose. I already knew that if I put 20% of my effort on speaking and writing, I would improve faster. So, what I did, I started putting 80% of my effort, 80% of my time had to be spent on speaking and writing. The other 20% could be reading, listening, and everything else. At first, it was uncomfortable. ...
And just after 3 months, the results were insane. In just a few weeks, I started to improve.
4. Every Saturday he creates a learning plan for the following week.
"the way you make decisions might be affecting the way you speak English.
That is called decision fatigue and it kills your productivity, especially when you're learning English. Every time you ask yourself, should I read today? Should I watch a video? Should I practice speaking? Your brain is spending energy just making decisions.
And after too many of these small choices, you lose focus. you get tired and procrastinate. That is why I decided to make less decisions. Wear the same shirt color plan when you're going to eat the day before. That is what most people that want to be or already are successful do because the fewer decisions you make, the more energy you have for what really matters."
...
Fluency is not about how much you practice. It's about how consistent you are. And when you plan your week in advance, you remove all the excuses. You don't waste time thinking. You don't waste energy making decisions. You just do. and doing is what make you fluent.
So from that moment on every Sunday evening became a habit. One hour no distractions just me and my plan and that 1 hour was the reason I never stopped.
